Session Zero Heroes - A TTRPG Actual Play Podcast
Speaker A: Hello traveler. I'm not sure what strange magic must have brought you here, but you have stepped into a realm of my creation. A sprawling city filled with danger and glory and most importantly, lots of gold out. I call it Ilanumis. Who am I, you might ask? The name is Jarjin, and I'm the patron deity of gambling. Long story short, this group of idiots, or as you may call them, heroes, made a bet with me that they had what it took to make a mass trove of gold, but left some of the key details blank. So I fill them in myself. I send them to this pocket dimension, into the city I had created with brand new bodies they'd have to attune to. Can these fools pass my test? Or will they be trapped, um, here forever? So, um, experience my world of trials and tribulations and join alongside this posse of pitiful people, or as I like to call them, the Criminals of Isla Numis.
Speaker B: Welcome, everybody, to the sort of pseudo first episode of the what is called the Criminals of Ela isla, you name. Uh, I thought it was who's? Moose.
Speaker C: Who's Moose?
Speaker B: Who's Moose? I love Who's Moose? No, it's numis. There we go. Numis. Criminals of Isla Numas. For those of you that are freaking.
Speaker C: Out right now, thinking, whoa, what's going on? Where's the Benders and Brews podcast that I know and love and brought me here in the first place, don't worry, we're not closing out the Benders and Brews podcast. This is A-D-D podcast that we're creating in addition to our channel to kind of round out the RPGs that we as a group play. Um, and it means more content for you, which is great. It also means that we don't just kind of have downtime when we're not recording and posting episodes of Benders and Brews while we're kind of working between seasons. So just more content.
Speaker B: Different.
Speaker C: Uh, RPG. We're playing Dungeons and Dragons, fifth edition. So, um, I've got a group of people around the table. Some of them are people you'll recognize from the Benders and Brews podcast. Some of them aren't M, all with different brand new, interesting characters, but just a little bit of a background to what's going on in the campaign. So, uh, we've been playing Dungeons and Dragons, some of us for a while, a couple of years, um, some of us a little bit shorter, but nonetheless, um, together. And we were running a campaign before this. And this is going to take place sort of within that same universe or that same world with the same characters they were playing as, but put into new bodies with not all of their old abilities and skills and everything that they had before. I think you guys were at what level? Seven.
Speaker D: I think it was like nine.
Speaker B: Nine.
Speaker E: Thought so.
Speaker B: Let me look. I'm pretty sure it was seven.
Speaker E: Jackson was spoiled.
Speaker B: Jackson was spoiled.
Speaker D: It is level eight.
Speaker B: Eight, okay. Right in the middle, right in the center. Um, and you guys had all kinds of great, cool, fun abilities. That skyler as the DM was like.
Speaker F: Oh, man, how do I challenge these guys?
Speaker B: So I'm shooting you all the way back to level one, um, with new bodies and new classes and races and skills. And this is going to get interesting. It's going to get interesting. So you're in a new world, um, but you remember the character that you used to be. So, uh, we're going to go around the table. Everybody's going to mention who they were and what they're now kind of waking up and playing, I guess you could say. So, Dave, you want to kick us off?
Speaker F: All right. So before I was playing Maki, maki, who was raised in the Monastery of the Path of Light, whose monks were dedicated to following the light and self improvement through brilliance. Mhm. But Maki always teetered towards the dark. He was a traveler, if you will, and he sought self improvement, but in a different, more chaotic way than those who stick strictly to the Path. In Maki's view, he believes that there are multitudes upon multitudes of alternate dimensions in a myriad of realities. With such a vast array of planes of existence, why limit oneself to the light when change from the dark is so easily available? Maki is the nexus. He will travel this plane and others, uh, to capture the methods of combining the philosophical and elemental forces that define other planes.
Speaker D: As soon as he sobers up.
Speaker F: As soon as he sobers.
Speaker B: That's right.
Speaker F: Drinking problem. And as often his path goes down many side trails and he gets lost along the way.
Speaker B: Many side trail that's the doors of many taverns bars.
Speaker E: He's like, all right, today I will.
Speaker D: Go to the 6th Dimension. Oh, dear.
Speaker B: I'll take that with me.
Speaker F: Tell us where we're supposed to say who we are now.
Speaker B: Yeah, tell us about who you will be playing.
Speaker F: Samaki is going to find himself.
Speaker B: Not.
Speaker F: In the usual body. Uh, he's used to the strong, toned well, not really, but dead body before. Now he's a weak little bird man.
Speaker B: Oh, no.
Speaker F: But he's still got the darkness thing going for him.
Speaker B: Yeah, there you go. And to clarify, as a Kenku, not an Arakakra.
Speaker F: Yes, he is a Kanku Kenku.
Speaker B: So I've put you all into bodies that are kind of considered the more man what's the word? I don't want to say lesser. That sounds bad. But usually mischievous races or creatures, I suppose you could say. Yeah.
Speaker D: Uh, kind of teetering on the edge of actual humanity and civilization and just wildebeest.
Speaker B: Yes, exactly. Uh, the typical henchmen, for the most part, I guess, oftentimes used. So, um, that'll be a common thing. Quinn, I'm going to skip over you for a moment. I'm going to save you for last, given the circumstances, uh, for those listening. We'll get to that. Um, Jackson, you were somebody before all of this. Who were you?
Speaker D: Uh, yeah, one that I played for half a session.
Speaker B: That's true. We had just lost Jackson's character, his previous character, at almost the end of the last session we did in the previous campaign.
Speaker D: And now, uh, his name was Dahaz Vegodather. His informally known as Des. Um, he was a Triton fighter, part of a Knight's Corps, the Order of the Seahorse.
Speaker B: Nice.
Speaker D: Um, and he came from the ocean, an Atlantis type area.
Speaker B: Nice.
Speaker D: Refused to bathe, dude. He smelled like fish, but rightly, so he lived in the ocean. Who needs to bathe when you're surrounded by water?
Speaker B: Yeah. How would you even bathe? Right, exactly.
Speaker D: What, are you going to go to the Goo Lagoon or something? That's just gross.
Speaker B: Yeah.
Speaker D: Okay. Uh, um, I only played him for half a session. It was hard to kind of flush out his ideals and whatnot, but he cared for people. He's that nightly type never left anybody behind. Um, but you know what? He was who he was.
Speaker B: He was who he was.
Speaker D: You know what? Today he wakes up as a somehow knowing the art of the hunt and a complete opposite kind, um, of lifestyle. He is reborn as a Ku Ranger.
Speaker B: Yes.
Speaker D: Um, so from the seas to the skies, if one will, which will be.
Speaker B: Interesting, he's definitely going to have to really find that other new side and.
Speaker D: All of a sudden loses his voice and can only mimic sounds that I guess his new body has heard in the past.
Speaker B: Right.
Speaker E: So there's definitely he can read and write.
Speaker B: There's definitely going to be some kind of competing things, uh, going on within each of you for the most part, except for Quinn, which again, I'll get back to in a moment. Um, of know, here's my previous body and here's what I used to do, and here's how I used to think. And then there's this random new body that I got shoved into, and it's got new ideas and new concepts that it's trying to kind of push on me in a sense. Um, so it'll be kind of interesting to see that dynamic. And again, um, the cool thing about Jackson, your Triton character is it's going to be a sort of mystery for a lot of the other players here who haven't really gotten to experience him. So depending on what happens and you guys eventually getting back, um, to your original bodies will be interesting for them to kind of learn more about you along the way here, but then not in the same body that they'll eventually get to hopefully see you in once again. So, yeah, that'll be an interesting journey. Uh, fatty lumpkin.
Speaker G: All right, for personal reasons, I chose to remain anonymous. And so I'm going to go by the name Fatty from my, uh, Fatty.
Speaker B: Lumpkin favorite Lord of the Rings Horse fatty lumpkin.
Speaker G: Prior to this out of body experience, I was a circle of the moon druid, and I had very humble beginnings. I was raised by wolves. One of them may or may not have been a werewolf, but we try to keep that identity under wraps. Like my own identity as a circle of the moon druid, I struggled with multiple personalities or tried to intermix multiple personalities with the various animals that I would try entertain myself with.
Speaker B: That's good. So, actually, that's going to be interesting because to some extent, you already had experience with the concept of kind of juggling two minds. I don't know why I said it like Christopher walken. I don't know.
Speaker F: That sounds like.
Speaker B: Um but, yeah, you've juggled with that concept already, so it'll be interesting to see how he maintains that going into this new character, which.
Speaker G: Is an echo knight. So we're kind of doing a 180 going from some spell casting, wild shaping druid to pretty much a more melee oriented fighter. But this one does have a bit of a multiple personality disorder as well, in that he is an echo knight.
Speaker E: Uh, I get it, because, like, the.
Speaker B: Echo thing, I feel like there's something there.
Speaker D: They're so useful.
Speaker B: I'm intrigued. I've never actually played with an echo knight before. They're very cool. Yeah, that'll be exciting.
Speaker G: I hope to live up to that expectation.
Speaker B: I'm sure you will. It'll be fun to for many of us to get to learn the abilities of what, an echo night, even, right? That's right. Fantastic. All right. Uh, I can't say last but not least, because we still have to get to Quinn, but cameron. Hello. What's going on? Who were you?
Speaker E: Uh, so, I'm Cameron. Uh, I played a character named Roric Frostbeard, and he was famous for his frosted tips and his frosted ah.
Speaker B: Uh, there we go. Okay.
Speaker E: Um, he was a dwarf pirate who, uh, just loved being he moved from his caves and he went straight to the sea. And when he did that, his body hit a weird transformation where when he raged, because he was a barbarian, when he raged, ice would just form around his body and everyone around him, and it would protect him. And that was his whole stick, was he would just kind of charge in the people recklessly, and just.
Speaker B: By the.
Speaker E: End of every fight, he'd just be this ice glazed over monster with glowing blue eyes and stuff, and then it would just kind of melt away afterwards each fight. Um, so, needless to say, he handled every problem with his pure strength. And now my new character, uh, looked, and strength is my lowest stat.
Speaker B: You got a real flip flop on.
Speaker E: I got an act, just like everyone else said, I am the opposite. Now, instead of a jump in and punch, the first thing I see, I am now a quiet rogue goblin.
Speaker B: So I'm not going to be as.
Speaker E: Quiet, but I'm way sneakier than what I was, which was just loud and rough. Now I'm sneaky and stealthy.
Speaker B: Snarky. I have a spark.
Speaker E: Yeah, that's the best way to describe my character. He's got a little spark to him, a little spark plug.
Speaker B: And that'll be fun.
Speaker D: That'll be silly.
Speaker B: So fantastic. Yeah, that'll be an interesting flip flop, like I said, of, uh, skills across the spectrum from the opposite end, as they say. So fantastic. All right, now we can say last but not least, we've got Quinn. Now, Quinn, uh, you played a little bit with some of us before as far as D D goes. Uh, not as often as the rest of us have, but you've had some fun doing it. Uh, you are the only one that's coming in without a prior character, which means that your character is native to the world that you guys are going to be thrown into, which is going to get real interesting really fast. Uh, tell me about that character.
Speaker H: Yeah, I play, uh, a kinkun named Feather McGregor. Uh, feather.
Speaker B: McGregor.
Speaker H: I'm just part of the so, uh, uh, yeah, I'm native to this, you know, member of the, uh, a chill little bird dude. Uh, yeah, got a few secrets know. May come out, you know, may not come know. Really like sauce. My nickname is Little Sauce.
Speaker B: Little Sauce.
Speaker H: Um, I own little Sauce's sauce company.
Speaker B: Wow, that's very, uh, business.
Speaker H: Yeah, we'll call it that. Totally not a side hustle.
Speaker E: What class are you?
Speaker B: What is business?
Speaker F: Uh, bird class.
Speaker H: Uh, I'm going to be a wizard.
Speaker B: He's a wizard.
Speaker H: Uh, so I do all the wizard the wizard stuff.
Speaker B: Magic and the spells.
Speaker H: Yeah, I'm pretty much just a chill bird components. Uh, just living his life. Uh, got some money handed down to me from my grandfather, my father before him. Um, use that to make a little Sauce a sauce company. A little sauce, by the way.
Speaker B: Yoyo. A little sauce.
Speaker H: So yeah, that's about it. Really?
Speaker B: All right, right on. So we've got another, like I said, a native to this world. He comes in with some money. He's got his own little business. Um, and I'm kind of personally crossing my fingers that you guys kind of use him as a guide into this world to some extent. But the irony is that Quinn knows not very much about this campaign. So you guys are going to be like, hey, so what's the deal with this? And then I'll just speak through Quinn's mouth as like, yeah, Quinn tells you or rather, uh, Feather McGregor or Lil.
Speaker E: Sauce tells you about his eyes.
Speaker B: I like to refer to.
Speaker E: His, uh, eyes go to the back of his head.
Speaker B: Made you a cleric, and he's a kenku.
Speaker E: So it makes because it's not his voice.
Speaker B: Ah, fantastic.
Speaker E: Really have a voice to see. Exactly. So they're the perfect channel conduit for, like, a god to speak through.
Speaker B: They really are awesome. So that's basically the gist of what.
Speaker C: We'Re going to be jumping into.
Speaker B: We'll, uh, be publishing the first episode alongside this, so you can also join us in jumping right into this campaign and this fun again. Benders and brews. The Avatar Legends podcast is not over. We're not not continuing it or anything like that. It'll be right back the same time of year that we do it every year.
