Session Zero Heroes - A TTRPG Actual Play Podcast
Episode 0
Speaker A: Uh, Jasmine, Oolong, green and white. Long ago, these four teas were skilfully brewed at the blissful Brew. Then everything changed when the shop's popularity threatened its existence. All Mr. Okuron, the shop's owner and tea master, could do was to recruit four teenage orphans to learn his trade and and staff his shop. A year has passed since the orphans were hired, and although their skills have progressed, they still have a lot to learn before they can brew anything. But I believe that they have the potential to make the blissful brew the greatest tea shop in the world.
Speaker B: Welcome to our, uh, Avatar Legends Real play podcast, Benders and brews. I want to thank all of you for tuning in to start out with. We have a sort of mini episode for you, which is our session Zero, where I will go through each of the players who will introduce themselves, as well as give a brief overview of the characters they'll be playing. We wanted to share this with you to help you get a better understanding of the wonderful characters you'll be following through this homebrew campaign that we've created as a reminder, and you'll probably hear this a lot. This is a non canonical podcast, meaning that we will often be jumping in and out of the canonical Avatar verse, but be sure that we will do our best to preface any of those jumps. The main thing to keep in mind is that things will be taking place more or less near the beginning of the Hundred Year War, as the Fire Nation is starting to make known their intentions to otherwise take over all the other kingdoms. Although not everyone is aware of it yet. Avatar Aang is of course, still trapped within the iceberg, and many of the main characters from the original series have yet to even be born. So hopefully that gives you an idea as to where we are starting from. Now. Without further ado, Benders and brews, episode Zero.
Speaker C: Uh, so thank you guys for joining us for the first episode. We're super excited. Um, I'm going to have, uh, everybody go through and introduce our characters, starting wiTh, of course, myself. Uh, I am Skyler Gorset and I am the game master. So I have been creating the story alongside my co writer, Nick, uh, who's been helping me with the story. Um, he will remain a ghost writer. He is a figment of our collective storytelling imaginations, and, uh, so he's been helping me out, come up with some cool story ideas that these guys are going to play through. So tell me a little bit about yourselves. Uh, I don't really care who starts off. We can start with Connor, since he's right across from me. Yeah.
Speaker D: Uh, you want me to just give a brief rundown of my character?
Speaker C: Yeah, who you are and then. Yeah, your character.
Speaker D: All right. Well, my name is Connor in real life, and my character's name is Brock Lee. He is a farmer from, uh, he grew up as a farmer. His dad, this is have his. So his dad is the cabbage guy who encountered Team Avatar on several occasions. Unfortunately for Brock Lee, he lost his younger brother in a Fire nation attack that burned down his village. He was forced to go to a fire nation work camp because of it. And that is why his arch nemesis is Wang Long, who was the. Yes, Wang Long. A very mature name.
Speaker C: Remember that name?
Speaker D: Who was the warden at this prison camp? And that is who his arch nemesis is. I'm an Earthbender by trade, and he is currently living in. What's the name of the Gao?
Speaker C: Uh, Ling.
Speaker D: Gao Ling. He is working at the tea shop as a dishwasher, but he is also moonlighting as an earth rumble fighter. He's not good by any means, but he just gets the extra money to support his family, who is now out of this working.
Speaker C: Yeah. And Connor brings up a really good point that, uh, I will probably try to incorporate into my, uh, intro, but I'll make sure to mention it now, which is that everything that we do here is kind of, it's set in the 100 year war era, uh, kind of near where everything starts happening with Aang and Team Avatar and everything like that, technically, amidst that whole scenario. Um, but this is non canonical. Uh, we wanted to kind of just, uh, follow in that really familiar world set that everybody knows and loves, but not have to worry about stepping on the toes of the creators and the amazing show and series that they created. So everything that we do is non canonical, but we're playing off of it. Um, so you might hear reference to some of the things that happen in the show, but just know that we're not trying to play it in such a way that, um, we're using the specific show line. So anyways, going on to, uh, Cameron.
Speaker E: Hello, I'm Cameron. Uh, I am going to be playing Bill Dore, uh, who is the Guardian. Bill, uh, Dore is a pretty chill dude, I guess is the best way to describe him. He kind of just showed up one day in the town, doesn't really talk much about himself. He more just helps other people, helps, um, at the shop, uh, keeps to himself as well. But he's also super friendly, uh, and he seems to always care about how your day is going versus how his day is going. Um, but other than that, not much really is known about him in terms of his past. Uh, the other players just know that he kind of just showed up in town one day in the town of Gaoling.
Speaker C: Yes.
Speaker E: And he showed up in this town, and he seems to only be close with the guy who runs the shop.
Speaker C: Whose name is Mr. Okuron. For those that are listening, um, the.
Speaker E: Only big thing that players would know, or rather characters would know from first seeing him is, besides for the fact he's very good looking and very tall, is that he has a fire, like a scar from a burn on his right hand that takes up, like, his whole right hand. But other than that, there's not much else about him.
Speaker C: Okay. And for the people listening, he's a non bender. Yes. Okay.
Speaker B: Sorry.
Speaker E: I didn't say that he's a non bender. Uh, he'll be fighting with a bow staff, but as a guardian, he's more of a protector than, like, an offensive fighter.
Speaker C: Yeah, that makes sense. That's why he doesn't use something like bladed.
Speaker E: Exactly.
Speaker C: Okay. Very cool. All right, Dave, tell us a little.
Speaker F: Bit about your character, Dave. Here I am playing the youngest member of the party at, uh, 14 years old. I am playing an earthbender named Guao Han. Guohan is short, wide, and full of pride. He's got black hair, a two block haircut. He's a little pudgy on the pudgy side. That's okay. He was born in the dirt in the plaintown. His parents, he never knew him. They were poor. Ah, somehow he ended up. Whether he was sold for ticket admission or just picked up in an alley, we don't know. He ended up joining a traveling carnival. Carnival was kind of one of those sketchy carnivals, kind of anything goes. There were good people in the mix, but there were also bad people. So Rauhan has some walls he's built up. Um, he might not want to let everyone in, but he kind of does at the same time. He wants connection. He wants a home. So some people leave home. Some kids run away from home to join the circus. Well, Guaohan ran away from the circus to find a home. Oh, wow.
Speaker C: That's deep.
Speaker F: That's deep.
Speaker C: Awesome. All right. Or Guao Gua.
Speaker F: Got it.
Speaker C: Wow. I'm going to struggle with getting that. Maintaining that one.
Speaker F: You can just call me Han.
Speaker C: Han. It's Han. All right. And, Michaela, tell, uh, us a little bit about your character.
Speaker G: My, um, character's name is Mika, she is the rogue. She's kind of had, um, a little bit of a rough past. She's kind of been on her own. Her and her dad got, um, separated from the southern Water tribe, and she found her way to Gawling and is working in the tea shop as also a dishwasher.
Speaker C: Did you say, um, she's a waterbender. Did you say that?
Speaker G: Oh, yeah, she's a waterbender.
Speaker C: Okay.
Speaker G: She's 17.
Speaker C: She's 17, she's a waterbender and she's a dishwasher, which makes a lot of sense.
